Maurice Sendak NUTSHELL LIBRARY 1962 Author-SIGNED 1st Edition Pierre Alligators All Around Chicken
Lot 15: Maurice Sendak NUTSHELL LIBRARY 1962 Author-SIGNED 1st Edition Pierre Alligators All Around Chicken
Maurice Bernard Sendak (born June 10, 1928) is an American writer and illustrator of children's literature. He is best known for his book "Where the Wild Things Are,"published in 1963. Sendak gained international acclaim after writing and illustrating "Where the Wild Things Are," a Caldecott Medal-winning picture book about a boy banished to his bedroom without his supper. He deals with his anger by imagining himself king of an island filled with enormous, frightening monsters. Critically acclaimed and controversial, Sendak is one of the first children's writers to deal frankly with the fears and anxieties of childhood. "Where the Wild Things Are" is the first in a trilogy, to be followed by "In the Night Kitchen" (1970) and "Outside over There" (1981), which, in Sendak's words, are "all variations on the same theme: how children master various feelings--anger, boredom, fear, frustration, jealousy--and manage to come to grips with the realities of their lives."

It should be noted that this title belongs to a group of autographed Sendak books, often containing original ink sketches by the author, which are being offered in this auction. This particular set of books were part of the personal collection of Dr. Donald Davis Eddy, who had for many years a joint appointment in the English Department and the Department of Rare Books at Cornell University.

Bound in pink cloth with original dust jackets, this four-volume boxed set contains an alphabet book, a book of rhymes about each month, a counting book, and a cautionary tale all written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak. "The Nutshell Library" books have been highly praised for Sendak's skill "at integrating text, design, and illustrations," according to "Dictionary of Literary Biography" contributor John Cotham. Today, they are still considered among the artist's most successful efforts.

This work is referenced in Hanrahan A51, with a lengthy discussion of the thin bands (in teal, yellow, or off-white) that appear on the tails of the dustjackets of "Chicken Soup with Rice." The same band appears in this collection, with a dark green color. The copy of "Pierre" contains the following signed inscription on front flyleaf: "The Eddy Library / Maurice Sendak". The box shows very light external age/wear, and the books are solidly bound with clean pages. The volumes measure approximately 2 3/4" x 3 3/4" and are housed in a fully illustrated, paper wrapped box.

Mordicai Gerstein THE MAN WHO WALKED BETWEEN THE TOWERS 2003 1st Edition HC/DJ SIGNED by Author/Illustrator and "The Man" Philippe Petit Caldecott Winner
Lot 53: Mordicai Gerstein THE MAN WHO WALKED BETWEEN THE TOWERS 2003 1st Edition HC/DJ SIGNED by Author/Illustrator and "The Man" Philippe Petit Caldecott Winner
In 1974, French aerialist Philippe Petit threw a tightrope between the two towers of the World Trade Center and spent an hour walking, dancing, and performing high-wire tricks a quarter mile in the sky. This picture book captures the poetry and magic of the event with a poetry of its own: lyrical words and lovely paintings that present the detail, daring, and--in two dramatic foldout spreads-- the vertiginous drama of Petit's feat.

The Man Who Walked Between the Towers is the winner of the 2004 Caldecott Medal, the winner of the 2004 Boston Globe - Horn Book Award for Picture Books, and the winner of the 2006 Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children's Video

This First Edition Has Been Signed and Dated By The Author AND Signed By The Subject,  Philippe Petit.  Excellent Condition With Dust Jacket Protector.

"The Eternal Jew" Film Program, 1940 Anti-Semitic Propaganda
Lot 72: "The Eternal Jew" Film Program, 1940 Anti-Semitic Propaganda
"THE ETERNAL JEW" FILM PROGRAM Program issued in conjunction with the release of the 1940 anti-Semitic film "Der ewige Jude" ("The Eternal Jew"), a contrast between myths and stereotypes of Jews and the Nazi ideal of a "master race," between the alleged inferiority of the Jews and the superiority of the Germans. The 8pp. large program bears very little text - it consists almost entirely of unflattering photographs of Polish Jews taken from the film, one shown a kosher butcher smiling with upraised knife, an African mask used for facial comparison, and on the cover an image of Peter Lorre (also Jewish) in character as a child molester from the film "M". File holes at left. Thin Paper, Fragile, Small Chips and Edge Tears.

Lot 79: Antisemitismus der Welt in Wort und Bild (Anti-Semitism in the World in Words and Pictures) German Hardcover - 1935
Published in 1935 Germany and dedicated to NSDAP Franconia leader Julius Streicher (the notorious anti-semitic propagandist and Jew-baiter), the work is both a geographic and historical survey of anti-Jewish sentiment and activities on a global basis. Beginning with the Roman Empire and continuing through the 1930s, with overviews of Jewish populations, influence, and anti-Jewish agitation in America (featuring Henry Ford), England, France, Africa, Austria, Hungary, and more. Of particular note is the use of the writings of both historical and contemporary leaders and intellectuals, as well as a wealth of statistical data.
