John Tweddle (American, 1938-2022)

The seller of this painting (Local artist Orlan Hill) met John Tweddle while John was a student at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1960.

John and Orlan were participating in a project for the American Institute of Biological Services, creating artwork for biology films. After his classes at the institute each day, John and Orlan would work on the project which was in the Calvin Communication building at Truman and Troost.

John was getting ready to move out of the area after finishing school and traded the two paintings being sold in this auction for one of Orlan Hills paintings.

John and Orlan would also play chess on their lunch breaks. The handmade chess set in this auction was crafted by John Tweedle and given to Orlan as a gift.

These very early paintings and the chess set have been in Orlan Hills possession since that time and are now being offered for the first time.
