Bronze coins from this period are rather rare. The first coins in history were silver/gold or silver coins. This coin is among the earliest bronze coins ever minted.
The world's first coins were produced about 770 BC in Asia Minor. The Greeks were the first to circulate coins widely as a medium of exchange beginning approximately 150 years later. Coins of this early period are extremely rare. For the next 2000 years bronze, silver, and gold coins were struck in mints throughout the ancient world as the main system of currency
Bronze and sometimes silver coins were used for daily commerce in the marketplace, while larger silver and gold coins served as payment of larger debts and savings.
The design of the earliest coins followed no set patterns. Animals, flowers, and frequently deities were typical motifs. Beginning in the first century AD a pattern developed which appears on most coins throughout the world.
The obverse of the coin shows the bust of a present of past emperor with a legend around the outside of the coins and often included the year of the emperor's reign. The reverse of the coin varies greatly. Most emperors minted several hundred different coins paying tribute to deities, military victories, personifications of values, or cities. The legend on the reverse usually noted the tribute and a mind mark.
