Lenox 'The Patriots Bowl', Hand Decorated With 24K Gold, Commemorative Issue 1776-1976 Bicentennial Bowl, Includes Portraits Of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, And George Washington, Made In U.S.A.
The shape of the bowl is representative of the Revolutionary period of our history. It has the same shape as the porcelain bowls used in the gracious homes of the colonies. And is adapted from the captain's service used on the "Empress of China," the first American sailing vessel to open trade with the Orient.
Even without decoration, the Patriots Bowl, because of its historical significance and shape, becomes an important collector's item. To give the bowl even greater decorative significance, Lenox specially commissioned the outstanding portraitist Peggy Peplow Gummere to paint original portraits of men who guided our nation's destiny.
Research provided the names of five patriots, considered to be truly representative of the rugged individualists who helped shape our nation - John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington.
Mrs. Gummere embarked on a painstaking study of existing portraits, read biographies to grasp the nuances of each man's personality and immersed herself in historical works. This before she even mixed her palette. She studied clothing and expressions of the subjects to achieve the most authentic work possible. Her colors were blended so that the portraits on the bowl would be true to the style used in "miniatures" of that time. She then painted each original portrait on rare, thin pieces of precious ivory to assure proper adaptation on the ivory color of Lenox.
These portraits were then hand-applied to each bowl, faithfully capturing the artist's colors. Then they were framed and linked with 24-karat gold floral garlands, typical of the architectural design seen in lovely colonial homes.
The result is the Patriots Bowl - a lasting tribute to our nation's heritage. A meaningful and impressive work of art. You'll be proud to display it in your home.
