Technical Description: Russian Model 1870 Berdan II bolt action, single shot rifle, serial number 37842, caliber 10.66 mm or .42 Russian. Standard military configuration rifle. The blued round barrel is 32 ¾ inches in length; a heavy bayonet stud is mounted on the barrels right side 1-3/16 inches from the muzzle. The barleycorn front sight is mounted 3-1/8 inches from the muzzle. The rear sight is mounted just forward of the receiver and has a single folding leaf with elevation bar, graduated to 1500 Arshins (early Russian distance measurement 1 Arshin=28 inches). The barrel is fastened by two bright finished screw-clamping bands. The barrel is marked between the lower barrel band and the rear sight 1881 (year of manufacture), and No. 37842. The octagonal receiver ring is marked with the DOUBLE HEADED RUSSIAN IMPERIAL EAGLE. The bolt is finished bright, the bolt handle locking lug is marked R 19298, the cocking bar is also marked 19298. The full-length military configuration stock is unmarked and appears to have been sanded. The stock tip is bright finished iron, complete with original cleaning rod. The trigger strap has a BOW & ARROW symbol marked on it. The bright finished iron butt plate also has the BOW & ARROW symbol and 1975 marked thereon. The metal is smooth and clean aging to brown, a few patches of rust are on the bolt, a large patch of rust is on the butt plate tang and heel. Stock has been refinished. The bore is excellent. The upper sling swivel is missing. The rear swivel is mounted on the trigger guard bow. The rifle has the original bayonet, a socket type with a quadrangular 19 ½-inch blade. The 3-inch blued socket has a clamping band, the blade neck is marked 3867 and MA, ARROW. Historical Significance: The Berdan II bolt action was the most widely used single shot rifle in early Russian service. In battle use against the Turks it was commonly equipped with the Krnka Quick Loader, a device attached to the side of the rifle and holding a number of cartridges with heads up to permit rapid reloading.
