Technical Description: German Mauser Model 1871/84 bolt action, magazine rifle, caliber 11mm. Standard military configuration rifle. The round blued barrel is 31½ inches in length, fastened by three blued steel barrel bands. The upper band carries a bayonet mounting lug on the right side. The middle band carries the upper sling swivel. The front sight is an inverted V, the rear sight is a folding leaf, graduated to 1600 meters (sight base screw is missing). The left side of the barrel is marked 176, CROWN / F.W., 11. The barrel top is marked CROWN / SPANDAU (arsenal of manufacture). The left side of the receiver is marked 176 and I.G. Mod 71 /84.in Gothic script. The right side of the receiver is marked 1888, the year of manufacture. The rifle is fed by a tubular eight shot magazine housed beneath the barrel. The light colored stock is marked with numerous CROWN proof and view marks. The bolt will not open. The blue on the barrel is aging to brown; the receiver and bolt are gray with some staining. The stacking rod is bent. This arm was manufactured during the final year of production of the Model 71/84. Historical Significance: This model was adopted by Germany in 1884 to replace the single-shot Model 1871. The tubular magazine is copied from the Winchester-Henry except that (instead of loading through a gate) the bolt is opened to load cartridge into the tube. A magazine cut-off on the left side of the receiver allows the magazine to be held in reverse while the rifle is loaded as a single-shot weapon. The magazine, plus an ejector, which was added to this model, greatly increased the rate of fire. By 1900, the original black-powder Mauser rifles had become obsolete as first-line military arms, having been superseded in all countries by smokeless-powder rifles. But considerable numbers of Model 71/84 repeating rifles and the Model 71 rifles and carbines were still issued to training and reserve units in Germany, and probably had limited combat use by Serbian and Turkish troops during World War I.
