Technical Description: Austrian Mannlicher Model 1888/90 straight pull bolt action magazine rifle, serial number 2986B, caliber 8 mm (8 x 50R). Standard military configuration arm. The blued round barrel is 30 inches in length. The front sight is a barleycorn type; the rear sight is a quadrant type with range graduations on the sight protector edges, from 400 to 2500 paces. The left side of the barrel is marked 2986B. The receiver is bright finished and marked on the top SHIELD / WG. The bolt is also bright finished. The barrel is fastened by three flat blued barrel bands. The upper band
carries the bayonet stud on the left side. The middle band carries a sling swivel on the bottom and on the right side (broken off). The bottom sling swivel is mounted forward of the butt toe. The light colored wood stock is marked on the right butt stock PC in a
shield; the left butt stock is marked 2986B II. The stock is excellent, a few minor dents only. Metal is clean and smooth, aging to brown. The cleaning rod is missing. The sword bayonet with the rifle has an 18 ½-inch blade with a single fuller. The crossguard is marked on the left side A721. The grips are walnut. The metal scabbard is marked at the throat R581; the belt hanger is marked WG. The bayonet is in excellent condition. The rifle bore is very good. Historical Significance: None of the Austrian Mannlicher service rifles are used in significant quantity in active military service anywhere today. They were used extensively in World War I and II, however, and still exist in large numbers in the hands of collectors. A short description of each model follows. In 1890 the Austrian 8 x 50mm cartridge with smokeless powder charge was introduced. The sights of the M88 rifle were modified for the new and more powerful cartridge by the addition of new
graduation scales, which were engraved on plates and attached to the sides of the sights. Rifles thus modified are called M88-90.
