Technical Description: Austrian Model 1895 straight pull bolt action, magazine short rifle, serial number 4693D, caliber 8X56R Austrian, many were converted to 7.92 mm German service cartridge. Standard military configuration arm. The blued barrel is 20 inches in length; the front sight is a barleycorn type with sight protectors. The rear sight is a folding leaf with elevation bar; the leaf is graduated from 400 to 2000 meters (the leaf spring is broken). Behind the rear sight the barrel is marked on top with a large S, EAGLE 934, the left side is marked 4693D. The receiver top is marked EAGLE, BUDAPEST in an arc, and M95. The left side of the receiver is marked 4693D. The barrel is fastened by two flat barrel bands. The upper band has a bayonet lug on the
bottom and a stacking bar on the left side. The lower barrel band carries a sling swivel on the bottom and on the left side. Lower sling swivels are mounted on the right side of the stock wrist and on the butt stock forward of the toe (base only, the swivel is missing). The stock has had a dark colored varnish applied to it, the left butt is marked 4693D just above the butt plate. The butt plate is marked 4 / 4300 on the tang. Metal is clean and smooth, with minor pitting on the bolt. The stock is excellent. The bore is excellent. Historical Significance: 8mm Short Rifle M 1895 (Repetier Stutzen M95) The M95 Stutzen is frequently confused with the M95 carbine. It apparently was designed for use by special troops, i.e. Engineer, Signal, etc., and not for  Cavalry, since it is fitted with a bayonet stud and has sling swivels fitted to the underside as well as the side. This weapon also has a stacking hook, which screws into the upper band. When the rifle is fired with bayonet fixed, a blade on top of the bayonet barrel ring is used as the front sight to compensate for changes in center of impact due to the weight of the bayonet on the barrel. There are two versions of this weapon extant. The Austrian version appeared
in 1930 with the adoption of the Model 30 (8 x 56mm) cartridge. The Model 30 was a large-rimmed cartridge with a pointed bulletSpitzgeschossand therefore, a letter S, twelve millimeters high, was stamped on the receiver to distinguish it from the
unconverted weapons. These weapons were used considerably by the German police in World War II, and steel-cased Austrian-made ammunition, bearing the date 1938 plus the
German Eagle and Swastika marking, has been found in quantity. In 1931, the 8 x 56mm cartridge was adopted by Hungary, who called it the 31M (Model 31). The Hungarians had large quantities of M95 Stutzen on hand and converted many of these to the 31M
cartridge; these weapons can be distinguished by the letter H stamped on the receiver. It should be noted that M95 rifles rebarreled for the 8 x 56mm cartridgethe M30 or M31cannot be used with the old conicalinosed 8 x 56mm cartridge. Although both are rimmed, the 8 x 56mm is considerably longer and more powerfulthese cartridges are definitely NOT interchangeable. Both the Austrian and Hungarian conversions require special clips.
