Technical Description: French Chassepot Model 1866, bolt action, needlefire, single shot rifle, caliber 11mm. Standard military configuration rifle. The Chassepot was adopted by the French army on August 30, 1866. The bright finished barrel is 31 3/8 inches in length with an inverted v front sight. The right side of the barrel has a bayonet stud and guide rib. The rear sight is a folding leaf graduated to 1200 meters. The rear sight is marked above the pivot pin 58688. The receiver and bolt are unmarked. The barrel is fastened by two-barrel bands that are bright finished iron, secured by spring retainers. The lower barrel band carries the upper sling swivel. The stock is walnut, the left butt stock is marked 58868 (very faint). A circular mark on the right butt stock is illegible. The lower sling swivel is located forward on the toe of the butt. The cleaning rod is marked 54588. The iron butt plate is marked 42 on its face. The trigger guard is unmarked. The rifle bore is dark with strong rifling. Metal is clean, age gray with some staining and speckling. The barrel is bent downward at the upperband and is quite noticeable. The stock is very nice, few dents or bruises, some slivers missing along ramrod channel. Complete with correct sword bayonet. The bayonet blade is 22 5/8 inches in length, the handle is brass with a heavy recurved quillion.
The back of the blade had French script and the date 1868. The right side of the blade is marked c twice. The guard is marked on the left side 114.L.U.2.5. Correct ball tipped metal scabbard, marked at the throat F 869.85. The scabbard is aging to gray with a few dents. Historical Significance: The first breech-loading rifle adopted by the French army was the Chassepot M1866. The Chassepot weapons were manufactured for the exclusive
use of the French army and Gendarmery. Since production of the Chassepot was begun shortly before the Franco-Prussian War (which ended with the French defeat), this marks the only major combat use of these weapons. It is possible that the Chassepot weapons were used in some skirmishes in the French Colonies.
