Technical Description: French Berthier Model 1916, bolt action,  repeating rifle, caliber 8mm Lebel. Standard military configuration rifle complete with sling and bayonet. The front sight is a ¼ inch wide blade with a center notch or groove. The rear sight is a combination tangent and leaf, graduated to 2400 meters. The receiver is marked on the left wall, in script, St Etienne and MLE M16. The bright finished bolt is marked 52608 on the handle base. The trigger is marked 3315. A sheet metal magazine is visible below the stock line. The stock is walnut. The rifle bore is excellent. The rifle has the correct leather sling. The bayonet is a regulation cruciform or needle style with a 20 3/8 inch blade which is slightly bent 5 ½ inches from the tip. The blade is
unmarked. The quillion is marked 64341. The handle is bronze. The scabbard is the correct ball tipped metal style, marked on the throat 9_ _ _ _ _. Historical Significance: The Berthier rifle passed through several minor modifications. Most of the changes consisted only of variations in the barrel length, weight, and fittings. The only important changes took place in 1916 and 1934. The Model 1916 carbine and rifle were introduced after battle experience in 1914-15 proved the three-shot magazine capacity inadequate. A sheet metal magazine extension was added, to increase the capacity to five rounds.
