Technical Description: Japanese Type 38 (model 1905) bolt action, repeating cavalry carbine, serial number 46154, caliber 6.5 mm. Standard military configuration carbine with sling. Standard issue inverted V front sight, short folding leaf rear sight graduated to 2000 meters. Receiver ring top has CHRYSANTHEMUM and Japanese characters. The left receiver wall is marked 46154. The bright finished bolt is marked 726 on the handle root and 726 on the underside of the extractor. The mahogany stock is unmarked. The underside of the bayonet lug is marked 154. The cleaning rod
has been cut down to fit, probably originally a rifle cleaning rod. The sling is a brown composition material, now stiff and beginning to delaminate. The carbine bore is dark. Historical Significance: See Museum Numbers 136, 137, and 138. Adopted in 1939, the Type 99 (1939) 7.7 mm is an improved and simplified variation of
the Type 38 (1905) rifle. It was issued in long and short versions. It began to replace the Type 38 as the basic Japanese infantry weapon, in some battle areas, beginning in 1942. It is five inches shorter and fires a larger caliber, more powerful cartridge than the Type 38, but otherwise it is identical in construction. Like the older model, it is fitted to take the Japanese service bayonet. All parts not subject to stress, such as the floor plate, butt plate, bolt cover, swivels bands, and follower, are metal stampings. The bolt action is exactly the same, but not as smooth in operation, as on the 6.5 mm Type 38 rifle.
