Originally made as a single shot rifle. It was later modified by installing the Italian designed Vitali box magazine to make the arm into a repeating rifle and was then called the Model 1871/1888. The Beaumont is a turning bolt action rifle with an unusual mainspring design. Instead of the standard coil mainspring, the mainspring in the Beaumont is a V-spring mounted inside a hollow two piece bolt handle. While this design made for simplicity, and was a feature of several later rifles such as the Belgium Marga repeating rifle, in actual practice, it was not a successful form. In 1888, Holland modified the Beaumont single shot rifle to accommodate the Italian Vitali box magazine inserted in the action from below. This magazine is a modified form
of the American Lee single column vertical type. It differs in the form of a magazine spring which is a coil mounted in the center of the box and projecting well below the line of maximum follower compressing. The 11 mm Beaumont cartridge fired a lead paper patched bullet weighing 345 grams at a muzzle velocity of 1476 feet per second.
