Technical Description: Austrian Kropatschek Model carbine 1886 bolt action magazine carbine, caliber 11 mm. Standard military configuration rifle. The blued round barrel is 20 ¼ inches in length. Regulation barley corn front sight, folding leaf rear sight graduated to 1500 meters. The magazine is a tube located beneath the barrel. The receiver is marked on the left side E.W.F.G. STEYR/1886 and a CROWN/L.I o and 1886. The bolt is bright finished and is marked 443 in several places. The number
443 is also marked on the right side receiver wall below the ejection port and on the barrel forward of the receiver ring. The stock nose cap is marked 443 forward of the bayonet lug. The walnut stock is marked on the right butt in a circle M1886/STEYR-
1886, in the circles center is marked E/WC. The left butt has a circular mark or crest but it is not decipherable. The metal is aging to brown, thinning on the barrel. The stock shows wear and use with minor dents and bruises. The bayonet with this rifle does not
appear to be correct as the muzzle ring will not fit over the muzzle. The bayonet is a saber style having a single edge blade with fuller. The blade is 18 ½ inches in length. The right side of the blade is marked with a FOUR LEAF CLOVER design. The back
of the blade is marked in script STEYR 1886. The guard is marked S 594. The grips are walnut. Correct ball tipped steel scabbard. The blade has minor speckling and staining. The scabbard is an aged brown and well worn. No leather frog. Historical Significance: Mr. Claude Warner was the owner of this piece and its donor to
the museum. His notes identify this rifle as being manufactured for Portugal. The Austrian Arms Manufacturing firm of Steyr produced Kropatschek rifles for other countries as well as Portugal, one example being France.
