American Peabody Single Shot, Breech-Loading Rifle, .45-70 Caliber
Technical Description: American Peabody single shot, breech-loading rifle, .45-70 caliber. The round barrel is 33 inches in length, fastened with two-barrel bands; secured by retainer springs. The combination front sight and bayonet stud is mounted 7/8 inches from the muzzle; the rear sight is a folding leaf type with elevation bar, the leaf is graduated to 1300 yards. The elevation bar is also adjustable for windage. The left sight wing is graduated to 400 yards (1,2,3,4). The left side of the barrel at the breech is marked EE STAR P W in a single line. No other barrel markings were noted. The breech is marked on the left side PEABODYS PAT / JULY 22, 1862 / MANFD BY / PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. / PROV R. I. in five lines. The letter B is marked on the right side forward of the hammer. The iron butt plate has the letter R stamped on the tang. The two-barrel bands appear to be regulation U. S. Model 1861 bands, the right side of each band is marked U. The walnut stock is a two-piece design and appears to have utilized an U. S. Model 1861 rifle musket stock. The butt stock is deeply marked on the right side A2 / 29, the stock at the rear of the breech is marked A2 /29. The forestock is unmarked. The lower sling swivel plate is deeply marked CONN / 277. The bayonet fixed to this rifle is a socket type with clamping band and has an 18-inch angular blade marked at its base 25. The ramrod is a tulip head style and appears to be a modern replacement, it is not correct for this rifle. The metal is a smooth age gray, some minor pitting around the muzzle and bayonet socket. The stock is sound with minor dents, slight crack behind breech. Bore is very good. The bayonet is generally smooth age gray; minor pitting on socket. Historical Significance: Peabody Carbines and Rifles. Made by the Providence Tool Company, Providence, Rhode Island; c. 1866-71. Total quantity all models 112,000. Calibers 433 and 43 Spanish, 45 Peabody rimfire, 45-70, 50 rimfire and 50-70, and some European calibers. Breechloading, single shot. Any items left after the specified load out dates will be considered forfeited unless alternate pickup or shipping arrangements are made. It will be the buyer's responsibility to dismantle & disconnect any and all equipment. Please bring your own tools, labor, packing materials & moving equipment.
