Technical Description: United States Model 1816, Type II smoothbore flintlock musket, which has been converted to percussion, .69 caliber. The round iron barrel is 42 inches in length, marked at the breech P in an oval, over EAGLE HEAD V; the left breech flat is marked S. M. Co. The barrel tang is dated 1824. The bayonet stud is mounted 1 ¼ inches from the muzzle and is marked 10. The converted lock is marked EAGLE / US forward of the hammer and SPRINGFIELD in two vertical lines over 1824. The conversion to percussion is the drum and nipple type (Type 1) using a civilian sporting style percussion hammer. The hammer has some nice scroll engraving. The quality of the conversion is much nicer than on Museum Number 012, and was likely done in a well-equipped shop by skilled workman. The hammer is factory-made, the screw holes left from the removal of the frizzen and spring have been properly filled and grounded flush with the lock plate face. The stock furniture is iron and correct for the Model 1816. The bands are marked 10 on top, the trigger guard strap forward of the bow is also marked 10 and SD, the iron side plate is marked 10. The iron butt plate is marked US on the tang. The walnut stock is regulation Model 1816 type P in
an oval marked below trigger guard strap, illegible inspector cartouche in an oval on left stock flat. Old initials TDELV carved into left side of butt stock. The stock is split forward of the trigger guard tang, a large wood sliver is missing forward of the middle band on the right side. Numerous slivers of wood are missing around the lock, and the upper barrel band spring is missing. Both sling swivels are also missing. The ramrod is an incorrect type. Historical Significance: The United States Model 1816 had the largest production total of any flintlock musket made at government armories, about 675,000 pieces total. As with Museum Number 012, this musket was probably sold after being declared obsolete by the U. S. government, and converted to percussion by the owner or more likely converted to percussion by the S. M. Co and then sold. Converted surplus arms were widely used throughout the country during the 19th century for hunting and defense, especially on the frontier.
