United States Model 1898 Rage Bolt Action Magazine Carbine, Caliber 30, Serial Number 304655, aka 30-40 Krag Carbine
Technical Description: United States Model 1898 Rage bolt action magazine carbine, caliber 30, serial number 304655, aka 30-40 Krag Carbine. Appears to have been a Model 1898 rifle, which was converted to a carbine. The blued round barrel is 22 inches in length and is fastened by a single oval-claming band, which also carries the upper sling swivel. The front sight is not the regulation type for the M 1898 carbine, this arm has a sleeve mounted M 1903 type sight, the rear sight is the Model 1902. The left side of the breech is marked US below is marked Model 1898. Springfield Armory. 304655. The stock is walnut and is the half stock style, the left stock flat is marked with an inspectors cartouche, in script GTA / 1899 for G.T. Allen, Armory sub-inspector. The butt plate is unmarked and has a butt trap (empty). The rifle is in excellent condition with smooth metal, few rust spots on the magazine door, strong case hardening colors on the breech. Blue mixing and aging to brown. The stock is excellent, few dents only. Rifle bore is fine. Historical Significance: See also Museum Number 058. The serial number of this carbine indicates it is a shortened Model 1898 Krag rifle, with a Model 1899 carbine stock. This may be one of the rifles converted during the 1920's for the directors of Civilian Marksmanship as identified by Flayderman. A group of Krags made for the director of Civilian Marksmanship Sale to National Rifle Association members by the Benician Arsenal in the 1920s possesses semi-martial collectability. They are shortened Model 1898 rifles with Model 1899 carbine stocks and Model 1903 sights. Considered interesting variations, their values would generally be considerably less than the true Model 1899 carbines.
