A.K.A. Karabiner 98A, Standard Military Technical Description: German Mauser Model 1898a, bolt action, magazine repeating carbine, serial number 5210, caliber 7.92 mm Mauser, a.k.a. Karabiner 98a. Standard military configuration carbine. The blued barrel is 23 ½ inches in length. The front sight is a barleycorn type, tangent type rear sight graduated to 2000 meters. The receiver ring top is marked CROWN / ERFURT / 1918, the left side of the receiver is marked EAGLE 5210. Correct bolt with turned down handle, with flattened and checkered ball, the bolt handle root is marked 7971. Regulation walnut stock, the number 5210 is marked on the butt stock. Blued steel stock furniture, with the number 5210 marked on the butt plate and trigger guard strap. The firing pin tip has been broken off, and the rear sight spring is broken. The bore is excellent. Overall fine condition, clean metal aging to brown. Correct sling with carbine. Bolt is mismatched. Historical Significance: The Model 1898a is similar to the 1898 rifle. Weight: 8 lbs. Length: 43.3 inches. Barrel length: 23.6 inches. Production started in 1905, for use by cavalry, foot-artillery and signal troops; this model is actually a short rifle rather than a carbine in the present acceptance of the term. The stock extends almost full length, with a stacking hook beneath the front stock band. The barrel is lightweight. The receiver ring is slightly smaller than the standard rifle receiver. The bolt handle is turned down close to the stock. Due to its close position against the stock, the underside of the handle knob is flat and checkered for easier grasping. This model was used in considerable numbers during World War I. After the war, many were issued to the small German Army, called Reichswehr. For this use, the rifles were overhauled or built from parts manufactured during the war. The rifle illustrated is an example of the arms used for this purpose. It is marked ERFURT 1918. In addition to the original date of manufacture, the date 1920 (the date the rifle was overhauled or assembled for use by troops of the Reichswehr, or by the German police), is stamped on the receiver ring. The designation KAR 98 is stamped on the left side of the receiver. The designation Karabiner 98a was not stamped on the arm but was used in official papers in order to avoid confusion with other Model 98 carbines.
