The stock is sound but has many dents and bruises. Historical Significance: After Great Britain adopted the Lee rifle and .303 cartridge, many of the .450-caliber Martini-Henry rifles and carbines were rebarreled and converted to the new cartridge. The Martini-Metford was rebarreled with the shallow Metford segmental rifling designed for the first .303 cartridge loaded with black powder. The Martini-Enfield was rebarreled with the deeper concentric grooved Enfield rifling designed for the later smokeless powder form of the cartridge. The Martini-Metford rifle was issued in Mark I and II; the carbine, in Marks I, I*, II, II*, and III. The Martini-Enfield rifle was issued in Marks I and II; the carbine in Marks I, I*, II, II*, and III. The changes on Mark numbers were based on the Martini-Henry model rebarreled to make the conversion. For example, the Martini-Enfield rifle, Mark I and II, .303 caliber, standardized in 1895, was a conversion of the .450-caliber Martini-Henry rifles, Mark II, and Mark III. The Mark I* is identical, except an adjustable front sight was added. As with the Martini-Henry models, the .303 carbines were issued in two types - - the cavalry and artillery mode.
